Raddish Review

For Ariana's 7th birthday this year she asked to learn how to cook.  I am no stranger to the kitchen and I don't have a problem with kids in the kitchen I honestly didn't know where to start!  It is so overwhelming because there is so much to learn....enter Raddish!  I stumbled across this website while on vacation this summer.  It is a box subscription to teach kids how to cook.  It costs $25 a month.  Every month has a new theme, a patch, a kitchen tool, 3 recipe cards, a ring of table talk cards, and an extra activity.  On the website there is a link called Bonus Bites which includes a playlist which goes along with the theme!  I love themes so this is perfect for us.

Our first Box was called Bites From Brazil because this year the summer Olympics was in Brazil.  It was great that since we don't have TV channels that conveniently  we were on vacation at a hotel so we were able to watch the opening ceremonies.  I am not a big sports fan but I am a fan of people and learning about different countries and the feeling of unity.  I have never had an experience with Brazilian food but I sure do love the carnival music.

The first recipe we did was called Gaucho Steak Skewers.  It was wonderful to start off with a meat because all kids seem to want to do in the kitchen is bake cookies.  She also wanted to use the tool right away which was a garlic rocker.

Review:  Yum!  Still couldn't get Hermione to try tomatoes though!

The second recipe from this box we did was called Brazilian Cheese Bread or Pao de Queijo.  Ariana was really excited about this one because it is naturally gluten free so her cousin could eat it!  We used a new ingredient to both of us- Tapioca Flour.  We also invited her cousin to join us!  Sometimes a friend can be a help and sometimes they can be a distraction- this was definitely the case here.  We almost forgot to add the cheese!  But we got it in just in time.

Review:  The whole batch was eaten in 10 seconds flat by the whole family!  Delicious!

The third recipe from this box was called Brigadeiro Chocolate Bonbons.  While we had fun this one recipe was very messy!  I recommend freezing these for sure.  We had a bit of frustration in rolling these in the sprinkles but what is life without learning?

Lucy licking the chocolate!

Review:  So sweet!  We ran out of chocolate sprinkles very fast so we had to resort to using Christmas sprinkles and random colored sprinkles we found in the drawers.  Adults have one of these with a glass of Rose or red wine- perfection!

Our second box was called Flavors of Fall and who doesn't love fall!!?!

The first recipe in this box we did was called Pumpkin Crunch Breakfast Parfait.  We had a bit of trouble find a glass we could use for a parfait cup but we found some that would have to do.  This months tool was measuring cups so we measured our oats and pumpkin.  We popped in the oven and let the smells of fall fill the house.

Review:  They actually only took a few bites- said it was good and ran off.  Ariana said it tasted better the next day for breakfast because all the flavors were mixed and because now it wasn't so crunchy.  They really just wanted to eat all the dried cranberries.  I thought it was very good and the smell was divine.

The second recipe in this box we did was called Cornbread with Maple Bacon Butter.  It took a lot of restraint on Lucy's part not to gobble up all the bacon before we could put it on the cornbread.  Ariana was able to share this one with the Youth Group.  She pretended she was a caterer.

Review:  This was absolutely amazing!  The flavors of maple and butter and bacon- together!  Lucy thought it was too sweet with the butter on it but she gladly ate the cornbread.  We made two batches of it and had it for breakfast almost every day for the next week.

The third recipe in this box was Apple Cider Chicken.  I am always nervous about cooking chicken even as an adult because I really need to reinvest in a meat thermometer (ours broke ages ago) but I followed the directions carefully and I thought it turned out pretty good if not ever so slightly undercooked but it wasn't pink.  We had cousin over again for this one.  This was a much longer recipe and they stuck it out very well.

Review:  It was moist and full of flavor!  We loved pairing it with the rest of the apple cider.

Lastly since we have not been able to get the ingredients for our next box we did do the extra recipes this week that were in the extra bites.  We made potpourri, apple chips, and butter-nutty squash dip.  I called a fall explosion because we had so much going on at once!  So many smells and tastes!

"My baby squash!"

Review:  I had to finish most of the work myself.  The cook times for these were pretty long.  But we really enjoyed smelling the aroma of the potpourri.  The apple chips were hard to do.  I think we should have taken our time to slices them better or they were just too soggy.  They came out mostly mushy so I think we will just add them to oatmeal and make muffins or baked oatmeal.  No one else except for myself has tried the butter-nutty squash dip which I found a great change from traditional ranch dips.

All in all we love Raddish.  Our next box is called Fright Night Feast and I am excited to keep learning and working in the kitchen with my kids.  I hope you do, too.  It is a little spendy for mostly recipe cards and no ingredients but they also provide lesson plans which I love.  And if you can do this without those- great but if you need some guidance like I do this is great fun all planned out for you and your child.  My referral code is: wxfjp3   if you want to give it a try or give it as a gift.  Hope you and your family enjoy time in the kitchen however you do it!  Blessings!
