Popsugar Update-January

This is my progress on the Popsugar Challenge so far because I don't doubt that there will be at least a handful of changes from my year plan so I will put up a progress report once in awhile.  As you can see I have already made a couple changes mostly due to illness and mood preference at the time of reading.  Also it is just plain fun to see the progress unfold.  1. A book made into a movie you've already seen:  The Return of the King by J.R.R. Tolkien 2. True Crime: Truevine: Truevine: Two Brothers, a Kidnapping, and a Mother's Quest: A True Story of the Jim Crow South by Beth Macy 3. The next book in a series you started: Emily Climbs by L.M. Montgomery- CURRENTLY READING * 4. A book involving a heist:  The Heist by Janet Evanovich- DONE *5. Nordic noir:  The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Steig Larson (January Group Read)- DONE  6. A novel based on a real person:  Nightingales: The Extraordinary Upbringing and Curious Life of Miss Florence Nightingale by G

Heist

MOM'S READING This week is Heist week.  I didn't want to over think this prompt because it seemed like it should just be a light read- and it certainly was!  I read The Heist by Janet Evanovich and Lee Goldberg.  It was so fun.  It was a light, slightly, outrageous book but totally kept me entertained.  I chuckled for a good bit about a lot of it.  It came at the perfect time coming off of the heavy Girl with the Dragon Tattoo which took me a lot longer to finish then originally planned.   Popsugar reading stats: 4/40 & 0/10   HERMIONE'S READING This was a slightly difficult prompt to fulfill, but I was able to get some suggestions.  Hermione is actually a little behind this week.  She is still reading The Silver Chair but next week is a gimme week so she will catch up no problem.  Here are a couple of books I had for choices.   Thanks to my friend Heather for this suggestion PICTURE BOOKS WITH ARIANA AND LUCY I am g

Favorite Color

MOM'S READING This week we were suppose to choose books with our favorite color in the title.  It wasn't for lack of books, but I certainly wasn't in the mood for the books I had as potentials: The Red Tent by Anita Diamont, Red Rising by Pierce Brown, Red Velvet Cupcake Murder by Joanne Fluke, and Red Clocks by Leni Zumas were just a handful of titles I was leaning towards.  I tried The Red Tent but it was too similar to a book I had recently read.  The Red Clocks only just came out so I knew I wouldn't have time to finish it this week, but I will put both on the maybe pile and see if I get any extra time for either, but I am wouldn't call it good chances.  Needless to say I kinda moved on to next week's prompt only intending to get a general idea of what the story would be about got sucked in and read over half of the book already!  Oops!  Oh well!   So I kinda cheated as you will see when I get to Read Alouds. Popsugar Stats: 2/40 & 0/10  Newbery

Local Authors

MOM'S READING This week we highlighted local authors or books about Oregon.  Last year around March my husband and I bought a book which one of his fellow pastors got published.  We like to support that kind of thing.  I had intended to read it last year for "a book bought on a trip" but never got around to it so since the author of this book is from Oregon and I have personally met him and have the book signed I thought it would be a great time to read it. The Rescue  by Brian Robbins is about a girl who is asked to trust her life to God and guardian angels while being pursued by burnouts in a unknown future time after "Trump" has built the wall.  Part Left Behind series, part Touched by an Angel , part Fahrenheit 451 and a dash of Frank Peretti and Randy Alcorn style writing- it wasn't super original but it was entertaining and had a couple of suspenseful moments. While reading this book I couldn't help but think of some techno chase music to

Nordic Noir/Scandinavian Reads

MOM'S READING  So 2018 didn't exactly start off so well for me.  Stomach cramps and a fever shot me down at around 4pm New Years Day on Monday and didn't let up till some time in the evening on Wednesday.  Two of the girls threw up in school and one of them is giving me an anxiety attack because she won't eat and won't stop crying in the morning.  I want normal, but I guess that is too much to ask for.  Any way, prayers appreciated. For my Popsugar Monthly Reading we voted to read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo for the prompt  Nordic Noir.  I have heard of this book before and I had seen a very disturbing part of the Swedish version of the movie.  I was worried about the grittiness and the bleakness and the disturbing elements, but I have been surprised.  Don't get me wrong- it IS a bit disturbing and dark BUT it is also mysterious and intriguing. I even had time to finish the Swedish version of the movie after a couple tries.  It is more disturbing wa

My Weekly Check in Stats 2017

My Reading Year for 2017  Week 1 Ms 43: This is my first reading check-in! I finished Christmas in My Heart, A Second Treasury: More Heartwarming Tales of Holiday Joy for the prompt "A book with a red spine". I am less than 100 pages away from finishing The Winter People for the group read and for "A book with one of the four seasons in the title". I will most likely finish this tonight and jump straight in to the next- "A book recommended by a librarian". The librarian asked me how much time I have to read and I probably should NOT have said "a lot" but it is true I have a lot more time to read compared to most people. I was afraid she was going to pull out a huge book! It looks like a challenge though at over 500 pages. She recommended Angle of Repose . I know nothing about this author or this book. Should be fun though. Isn't the point of this challenge to learn and stretch ourselve
