Cloud Tea Monkeys by Mal Peet and Elspeth Graham

Mom: This was a beautiful book about a girl who wants to help her mom because her mom is sick.  She tries to do her mom's job, which is picking tea leaves.  She is just too small for such a big job, but her monkey friends help her and save the day.
Girls: They didn't listen because they were more interested in playing with their dominoes and drinking hot chocolate.

Raising Dragons by Jerdine Nolen

Mom: A cute story about a girl who just KNOWS how to raise dragons even if her parents are a little reluctant at first.  The unnamed girl names her first dragon Hank.  She reads to him, feeds him, and he flies her to school.  Even though she does disobey her father in the beginning (I may need to discuss consequences) it all turns out okay because this is what she was born knowing how to do- raise dragons.
Girls:  Ariana liked it enough to stop playing with dominoes and take a look.  She requested two readings of it so far.  I asked her, "What would you do if you had a dragon?"  Her answer surprised me- "Dragons are scary!  I am like the mom- I don't want to hear about dragons!"  Um..okay well she liked the book enough to request it?  Kids are funny.  Hermione liked the part where the dragon made popcorn.

Beatrice's Goat by Page McBrier

Mom: Beatrice wants to go to school.  It is her dream because she can not afford the book sand the uniform.  But someone sends her family a goat.  She works hard to build a place for it, feed it, and is able to sell the enough milk from the goat to buy a uniform and live her dream.
Girls: Hermione asked if this story was real which gave me a great opportunity to share about people in other countries who can not go to school and people who need help.

 Sparrow Girl by Sara Pennypacker

Mom:  This is a story about a war in China- a war on birds, particularly the sparrows.  The village blames the birds for ruining the crops but the only one concerned is a little girl.  Her father keeps telling her she is not a farmer and her brother tells her to listen to the leaders.  But she is over whelmed with sadness as the birds are killed around her.  She talks her brother into helping her save 7 of them.  In the end, the farmers realize their mistake.
Girls: They didn't really have an opinion on this one.

Mommy Reads- The Breath of Dawn by Kristen Heitzmann

This month I started off with a nice easy inspirational fiction.  It was a great escape.  It was not very believable but that made for pretty good fantasy.  This book is about a woman who is essentially trying to escape a cult-like leader by marrying a man so she can change her name.  They get married after only knowing each other for a month or so.  He is very wealthy- hence the fantasy.  He is battling with some anxiety and depression from the death of his first wife and daughter.  She saves him from being depressed for the rest of his life, and he saves her from a crazy man- win/win.  I was more interested the haunted house that never got resolved but still a fun light read.
