The Great American Read: Day 84 Moby-Dick! or The Whale

This book needs more whales!<----sarcasm  Moby-Dick by Herman Melville, a book I read for more than one English Lit. class in college, was not my favorite book.  Not sure if this is even fiction because the majority of what I remember about it was actually learning about different whales.  It certainly wasn't what I expected.  I, apparently, mentioned reading this book around my kids a few times and they seemed to think it was my "favorite" book- far from it.  Plus I think I have the dirty mind of a 7th grader- sperm, dick, erect, Pequod- would often set me giggling.  At one point I actually thought the book was just all symbolic- "white whale" represents the perfect homosexual partner and "Captain Ahab" the guy trying to figure out if he needed to kill, conquest, or just accept his own or other's sexuality.  I don't know- I think I was just trying to make this book more interesting because overall this book is just- meh.  Almost wondering if I should reread someday- almost.

Popsugar Challenge 2018 Nearly Complete with Mini Reviews

I managed to read 36/40 for the regular Popsugar Challenge of 2018 and 4/10 for the advanced section.  It is okay that I didn't finish.  I am happy with what I was able to accomplish this year.  Excited for next year! A book made into a movie you have already seen: "Cheesy, fun, but completely unbiblical." True Crime: "A little hard to follow, but I learned about the old-time circus." The next book in a series you started: "Wonderful, full of the optimism of youthful dreams." A book involving a heist: "It was like watching a funny movie.  It was a hilarious ride." Nordic Noir: "So intense and a lot of coffee drinking!  I was surprised by how much I liked this book even with how disturbing it also was." A novel based on a real person: "Based on the life of King Ahaz and King Hezekiah- I liked it but it might be a little forgettable for me."

Girls Can! Crate, Raddish Fun, and What Hermione Does

Over the last month as a random present for the girls but more specifically for Lucy we subscribed to a new box called Girls Can! Crate .  I have always wanted to instill in my girls that they are more than just princesses, playing house, or waiting for a boyfriend/husband in the future. Not that there is anything specifically wrong with those things  There are just so many adventures for girls/women.  Plus I actually wanted to learn about awesome women too.  It would be educational and inspiring. Our first box came in March.  She tore into it so fast I didn't have time to take many pictures.  This box was about the first woman to climb the summit of Mount Everest- Junko Tabei. In the box was an activity booklet, A flag/banner to decorate- including the pom poms, puffy paint and felt, and a weather experiment. My daughter loves art and so she was very happy that the intro box came with scissors and package of markers.  We haven't done too much with the act

The Great American Read: Day 3 A Prayer for Owen Meany

Now we are beginning with a book I had never heard of until recently on an episode of Brooklyn Nine Nine when Jake meets his half-sister for the first time and they are comparing bad dad stories.  His sister Kate says, "He came to visit once and hooked up with my mom's entire book club.  She can't see a copy of A Prayer for Owen Meany without fully weeping."  Jake replies, "I don't know what that is."  Well neither did I, Jake, neither did I till The Great American Read List came out. I probably won't have time for this book, but the reviews I have read for it sound interesting and I was very intrigued to find out about the faith aspect of this book.  I only read a couple pages but it seems similar to Walker Percy (which I didn't really like), but hopefully this book will be more relatable to me if and when I get a chance to really get into it.
