I have not been a good blogger.  I have not made it much of a priority.  It is a good thing this is for me and not for others.  I am going to go back to my regular updates I hope.  Just wanted write about the last things we have been up to before September rolls around.  While I was gone at Women's Camp my husband introduced the two older girls- ages 4 and 6 at the time- since then both of them had a birthday, to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory .  They LOVED this book and both subsequent movies.  We spend most of the rest of the summer reading the book and then watching the movies.  Neither can decide which movie they like better and everyone agrees that the tunnel scene in the older version is extremely creepy.  I had all these grand plans of introducing that book and the movies but I guess being flexible and just letting them enjoy stuff is the way to go especially for a family in our financial situation.  It would be great...

Sorry I haven't been posting.  My goodness did we have such a busy "nit" picking time.  The girls all got lice!  Plus a lot of other things happened in between but that was the main battle for nearly 2 months!  Finally got back to reading a little. In a small effort to highlight Africa and Black History month we leaned toward those books this month. Seeds of Change by Jen Cullerton Johnson Mom:  This is a story about Wangari Maathai who led the Green Belt movement in Kenya.  Wangari and other women started planting trees to help their village be more sustainable.  Wangari was the first black woman to win a Nobel Peace Prize and fought for the rights of women.  It is a wonderful story to read to kids about how one small idea can turn into something big and wonderful.   Girls:  They loved this book.  I must have read it at least 5 times- maybe more.  Hermione is always the one most interested to know if it is a "true for real story", which I still love that question.  It is such a teachable moment.  Wangari's Trees of Peace by Jeanette Winter Mom:  Okay, so I honestly didn't know these were practically the same story just told differently when I first reserved ...

Cloud Tea Monkeys by Mal Peet and Elspeth Graham Mom: This was a beautiful book about a girl who wants to help her mom because her mom is sick.  She tries to do her mom's job, which is picking tea leaves.  She is just too small for such a big job, but her monkey friends help her and save the day. Girls: They didn't listen because they were more interested in playing with their dominoes and drinking hot chocolate. Raising Dragons by Jerdine Nolen Mom: A cute story about a girl who just KNOWS how to raise dragons even if her parents are a little reluctant at first.  The unnamed girl names her first dragon Hank.  She reads to him, feeds him, and he flies her to school.  Even though she does disobey her father in the beginning (I may need to discuss consequences) it all turns out okay because this is what she was born knowing how to do- raise dragons. We have been reading all sorts of books over here and, of course, have not been able to update or have any regular posts.  Our Internet went down some time in November, I think, and with the holidays and birthdays all over the place it was not a priority to get it up and running.  Plus it was not something I could personally do anything about since we share the Internet with the church property (that is a different story so I will stick the topics).    Lucy, who is 14 months old today, is BOOKISH!  I am so excited because of all three of my girls you can tell she holds books correctly, points to them at bedtime like she knows what time it is, and has only ripped one page thus far.  I have always been big on reading to my girls from birth on.  We go to the library every week.  We are not short on books over here.  But my oldest, though she would listen to me read and had endless patience, seemed to think books were things to eat.  S...

I haven't posted in awhile but here is a book that was a favorite during the week we were working on the letter D.  My girls love dinosaurs especially the 3 year old.  The baby likes to chew on the action figures and the 5 year old likes to ride the big red apatosaurus that my husband had when he was a kid.  So naturally Danny and the Dinosaur was a big hit.  Ariana picked this one has her personal favorite this week.  Her favorite thing that Danny and the dinosaur did together was play Hide and Seek.  She said if she had her own dinosaur she would name it Holly.  Hermione has been asking if certain things are real or not and dinosaurs have been asked about on numerous occasions.  It gave me to opportunity to explain extinction again.  She knows the story of creation and a vague idea that many believe it took millions of years for the world to form, but of course we are not into anything truly controversial as far as evolution vs. creat...

We know it isn't Halloween.  My kids don't care.  This week I didn't have my Library List prepared so I let the kids go crazy and pick whatever they wanted.  I usually let them pick some thing on their own, but I also pick things for them as well.  It seems like every time I let them go wild picking books they pick books that are holiday themed (not around the time of said holiday). This one is so much fun!  There maybe some of you who don't celebrate Halloween or have a big thing against ghosts, witches, werewolves, and mummies (all are in the book), but we try to explain what each of these things are to our girls because people around them are going to talk about them.  My girls actually know about aliens and zombies, too. I am not going to go into a huge debate post about whether or not Christians should celebrate Halloween.  I honestly think there are more important things to discuss for the most part.  If this is a personal stumbling block ...
