Read-a-Thon

Image
I shared this on my other blog but it was very important to share it here as well. I have loosely been trying to do my first Read-A-Thon .  I have never tried one before and I still have some time left.  I finished The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan.  I was also able to start and finish One Crazy Summer by Rita Williams-Garcia.  I might have time to squeeze in one last book before I get too tired- probably going to read Left Behind because I have wanted to finish that series for a long time but was afraid to read it because of how horrible the writing is and I was not looking forward to being mocked by fellow English Majors.  Now I am old, I don't really care what people think, I bought almost all the books at a used book sale, and the books and technology are really outdated.  It will make for a good, light, and maybe even a slightly funny read.  We are due another end of the world book series, right?  Any way, it has been a pretty good re...

Different Ethnicity and Culture Reading

Image
MOM'S READING This week for "a book by an author that is a different ethnicity than you" I really wanted to revisit an old favorite from college days- The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan.  I remember this being the most down to earth and approachable book I read in college.  It didn't feel like it was trying too hard with symbolism and confusing with too hard words.  I loved learning about Chinese culture and mother/daughter relationships.  I am enjoying just as much the second time around. Popsugar Progress:  16/40 & 0/10 HERMIONE'S READING Sticking with the Asian theme I picked out Where the Mountain Meets the Moon and Starry River of the Sky both by Grace Lin.  I don't know for sure which one she will read.  I haven't seen here pick up either one just yet. ARIANA and LUCY We have mostly been reading more Junie B. Jones books but Lucy did find some new books she likes and has been super excited about.  This week she e...

Lyrics, Libraries, and Pseudonyms

Image
These last two weeks have been a bit random in trying to find time to read and write.  I haven't officially finished any books, but I have been reading plenty in my pockets of spare time through any means necessary- Kindle, audio book, and the regular way. MOM'S READING First off I have wanted to participate in a Book Club whether online or in person for years.  Right now I have to just be content with the Facebook group Women's' Bible Cafe for now and I usually have to buy the books because they are not always at the library.  This is also technically the first time really trying to connect and participate.  We are reading Why Her? by Nicki Koziarz and it is also going to count as "a book with song lyrics in the title" because of a song that has no connection to the book whatsoever by Monica. The Popsguar reading group for April voted to read Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan for the prompt "a book involving a books...

All the Catching Up

Image
It has been a very busy time with Lent and Pastor's Conference and Holy Week and Spring Break.  I am having to read shorter books and even figure out where I am schedule wise.  A BOOK WITH THE TIME OF DAY IN THE TITLE I read Afternoon of the Elves by Janet Taylor Lisle which is also a Newbery Honor book and very short.  I had read it before and I was wondering if my first impressions might have changed- they had not- if anything this book made me even more sad and confused especially as a mother. Hermione read Baby-sitters' Fright Night and I read it too just cause I love The Baby-sitters Club.  It wasn't a very good book but the costume descriptions where fun and it is all very nostalgic for me to read about beloved characters.  It is like meeting up with a group of old friends. A BOOK ABOUT A VILLAIN OR ANTI HERO  I couldn't tell if this was cheating but it felt like it fit the prompt so I counted it.  How to Be a Villain...

Book about Feminism and Extra Unrelated Reading

Image
MOM'S READING My Popsugar Group read for the month of March is The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood.  It is to fit the prompt "a book about feminism".  I was looking forward to this one because it is considered a classic and I was really curious about it.  It is turning out to be interesting but, for me, not very believable.   The speculation is fascinating though.   HERMIONE'S READING Even though I didn't tell her or help her pick this book for the "book about feminism" I have seen her currently reading Matilda by Roald Dahl.  I have seen this book on a few feminism for kids lists and I think it is so great that it worked out so well when we have been too busy to reconnect.  Hermione says her favorite part was when Matilda starts reading hard books.  I haven't even read this book so I am going to put it on my "want to read" list now.    PICTURE BOOKS Nothing special about the picture books we read thi...

A Book Set in a Country that Fascinates You

Image
MOM'S READING Well this is a really late post but on my husband's suggestion I have been switching my "day off" to Tuesdays and it is messing with my blogging schedule.  I am trying to see if this still works.  My brain is having a hard time wrapping around a new schedule especially in the middle of Lent.  I will just jump in and try to figure it out as I go. So this week I chose to read On the Road with Francis of Assisi by Linda Bird Francke to accomplish two goals- read about a Saint during Lent and to read a book set in a country that fascinates you.  I feel like I could have picked any book for this as just about every single country fascinates me to some degree but I wanted to line up a read during Lent and I like to think of myself as "Italian" even though I was just born there- I am not of Italian decent.  I wish there were better quality/color photos in this book.  I had to keep looking up stuff on Youtube to get a sense of the place...
